Japanese Market Research

The Japanese market is often frustratingly complex for those new to the Japanese culture and language. Intellingua takes the mystery out of doing business with Japan by using a strict methodology to help your company and its products gain a foothold in the Japanese market. We generally handle requests for Japanese market research in the following manner:

   • Determine Client Requirements:

We first gather a detailed history of your requirements related to the Japanese market. We listen to your understanding of the market so that we can understand why Japan seems like an attractive market for your product. We also gather a history of any previous Japanese marketing efforts to determine whether you have already identified potential distribution partners in Japan.

   • Start Market Research and Create Potential Partner List:

We next research the market in Japan for your product in order to determine market size, segmentation, competitor details (such as sales figures, number of employees, location, known partners, sales and marketing strategies), potential partner lists, and other market trends. If we purchase an off-the-shelf third-party research report, we simply pass that cost on to you, after getting your approval.

   • Initiate Written Communication With Prospective Partners:

Once they have been identified, we approach prospective distributors by sending them an initial written communication. This communication can be sent in the form of a mailed letter, fax, or email, and is typically sent on your company's letterhead or from your company's e-mail domain.

   • Initiate Spoken Communication With Prospective Partners:

Our initial written communication to prospective distributors will indicate the timing of a subsequent follow-up phone call. Your company need not participate in this phone call unless you desire to do so. The prospective distributor's interest in evaluating samples can often be determined during this call.

   • Facilitate Subsequent Dialogue:

We next facilitate subsequent communication between your company and its new Japanese partner(s), usually by translating further e-mail dialogues. Intellingua can also provide Japanese interpreting services during teleconferencing calls.

   • Facilitate and Participate in Face-to-Face Meetings:

When it is time to visit potential distributors in Japan or host a Japanese company's visit to your headquarters, we can coordinate this important first meeting. We can of course offer interpreting services and suggest subsequent steps once the meeting has ended. We also assist with gift-giving ideas. If a business trip to Japan needs to be planned, Intellingua can handle all aspects of travel planning and meeting logistics. We can offer options for all manner of business travel budgets.

   • Negotiate an Agreement:

Once genuine interest has been achieved on both sides, Intellingua can help you draft or review term sheets and distribution agreements. We can also help facilitate the creation of consensus during negotiations and e-mail dialogues that may lead to the signing of such agreements.

   • Manage Ongoing Relationships:

Once a distribution agreement has been signed, Intellingua can provide ongoing relationship management services to ensure that the requests of Japanese partners are handled in a timely manner, and to ensure that the requests of the U.S. company are communicated to Japanese partners in a culturally-appropriate manner. (Note: Relationship management services are typically provided under a separate Services Agreement between Intellingua and its client.)

Establishing a foothold in the Japanese market is half art and half science. By understanding the client's ideal partner parameters, researching the market and potential partners, making initial contact in a culturally-appropriate manner, gauging potential interest on the part of potential Japanese distributors, and establishing and maintaining a clear and meaningful dialogue between American and Japanese businesses, Intellingua enables you to analyze otherwise difficult-to-obtain information, make strategic decisions regarding the Japanese market, and begin to know, trust, and build an affinity for the Japanese company and businesspeople to whom you will entrust your success in Japan. Facilitating trust and respect is at the heart of all good partnerships — and it's what we do best.
